Shalikashvili to Opponents of Open Gay Service: Please Get Your Facts Right

General John Shalikashvili, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, published a Washington Post op-ed last week in which he questioned the logic and evidence of those who oppose allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

General Shalikashvili took issue with a March, 2009 statement signed by more than 1,000 retired Generals and Admirals which suggested that allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would "break the All-Volunteer Force." He argued that the statement was not based on evidence, and that scholarly as well as official military research shows that allowing gay men and lesbians to serve openly will not compromise military readiness.
